![]() Purgatory is the "cleansing" point between Heaven and Hell which holds the souls of those who sinned, but not badly enough to warrant immediate entrance into Hell. Here the souls are subjected to a ritual cleansing (torture), which could extend for any number of years, in order to prepare and purify them for entrance into Heaven. It is described in Dante's The Divine Comedy as an island mountain just beyond the realm of Hell.
