4. The Struggle for Power
In this chapter the author attempts to convey the idea that people seek to manipulate others and coax them into their way of thinking to obtain energy (in the form of attention), which they have lost through lack of connection with the divine spiritual force. He says this lack of spiritual connection leads people to seek human energy as a substitute, and the competition necessary to acquire the scarce human energy is what causes all conflict between people.
"To gain energy, we tend to manipulate or force others to give us attention and thus energy. When we successfully dominate others in this way, we feel more powerful, but they are left weakened and often fight back. Competition for this scarce human energy is the cause of all conflict between people."
He goes on to say that this form of communication is entitrely explainable with the theory of energy dynamics, that is: forcing people to listen is taking energy, having someone listen with interest is gaining energy.
We covered in the previous chapter that concentration in any form, attention giving or whatever, is not measured in energy. In fact, its not measured at all; its utterly impossible to subject something so intangible as attention levels to something as specific as measurement. Furthermore, if he believes so adamantly that its so wrong to bring someone around to your way of thinking, then why did he bother writing a book in such OBVIOUS violation of that exact principle?
To continue, it is dangerously nieve to assume that the cause of all human conflict arises from something as vague as "seeking energy". Hate, greed, lust, ignorance, bigotry and intolerance are but a few among thousands of causes of human conflict, and I can assure Mr. Redfield that no skinhead is looking for energy when he attacks Indian restaurant owners, no IRA member is seeking spiritual fulfilment when he bombs a British embassy and no serial killer claims hundreds of lives under the motive of bettering his position in the divine cosmos.
